5 best beaches in Mexico

1. Puerto Vallarta

The incredible mexican Pacific really shows off in Puerto Vallarta, one of the most beautiful cities in the Jalisco area. The city itself is a wonder, with its houses and their notable red roofs, streets made of rocks, and an infinite number of activities to make the most of your trip.

With many beaches to choose from, Puerto Vallarta is the perfect spot to relax and hang out by the sea. If you wish to explore the coast from beginning to end, we recommend booking a car rental and enjoying the ride.

The road trip starts at Playa Camarones, up north, known by its water sports events. Next stop is Playa de los Muertos, 1.5 mile from Camarones, which was given this name because it was an actual cemetery back in the day!

Another 1.5 mile south and we’re at the last stop: the Playa Conchas Chinas, considered one of the most romantic beaches of Puerto Vallarta. A great way to end this day-trip and our journey through Puerto Vallarta’s most beautiful beaches.

2. Cancun

Cancun is definitely one of the most popular destinations for Americans. The whole Quintana Roo region, where Cancun is located, is famous for the incredible views and the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean.

Cancun is no different and, to make most of your trip, we recommend visiting not just Cancun, which is the obvious choice, but also some other fascinating spots and beaches along the way.

The road trip through Quintana Roo’s best beaches starts in Cancun. With around 12 miles worth of incredible sights and beaches, the ones we recommend the most are definitely Playa Delfines, Caracol, and Tortugas. You can also check out the Cancun Underwater Museum and the Mayan Ruins, a must-visit for history lovers.

Our next stop is Tulum, 81 miles south of Cancun. This city is also full of history everywhere you look and is the spot for natural swimming pools with water so clear it’s hard to believe. In the area, these are called “spa de los Mayas”, the spa of the Mayan people.

If you think that’s all, you’re in for a surprise. We saved the best for last, as we arrive at Isla Mujeres, just 12 miles from Cancun. It’s a great destination for a one-day trip if you’re staying in Cancun only!

Isla Mujeres is perfect for a romantic sweet escape or a trip amongst friends. This incredible paradise has three beaches with crystal clear waters (no surprise there): Playa Lancheros, Punta Sur and Playa Norte.

3. Cabo San Lucas

South to Baja California you will find the incredible Cabo San Lucas, a perfect city to enjoy your summer in Mexico. Between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, you’ll definitely spend a quality time with your loved ones.

The trip starts around Cabo San Lucas, visiting Playa de las Viudas, El Chileno, Palmilla, Costa Azul, and Santa María. Soon after you’ll arrive at San José del Cabo, where you’ll drive through Hotelera and La Playita. A beautiful way to spend one or two days at the seafront.

Cabo San Lucas is also known for its marine life and in its waters you can find fish in colors you didn’t know were possible. Water sports are also a must-do while you’re there, don’t miss it!

4. Ixtapa

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is the perfect destination if you’re looking for one of the best beaches in Mexico on a budget. Ixtapa is a great escapade for a weekend or a two-day trip if you’re also visiting other places in Mexico.

Your visit should absolutely include a stop at Playa Gatas, the perfect spot for diving in and exploring the incredible reef and sea life that surrounds it.

Another visit you can’t miss is to the Isla de Ixtapa. This island has four beaches for you to enjoy: Playa Coral, Playa Pacífico, Playa Varadero y Playa Cuachalalate.

5. Acapulco

Acapulco is one of the most popular destinations in Mexico, famous for its beaches and closeness do the capital. Acapulco, however, is much more than that and has many activities for you to enjoy on your stay there.

To really appreciate the beach during the mexican high season, we recommend visiting Playa Punta Diamante. This beach is a little bit more private and less busy, ideal if you’re travelling with your family and kids.

As we’ve said, Acapulco is much more than just its beaches, so we suggest you take some time off the sand to visit other touristic attractions like the Fort of San Diego, Diego Rivera’s Mosaic Mural and the beautiful botanical garden.
